You might remember VidCaster, the San Francisco–based startup that provides professional video distribution tools but with a super simple user interface. In our initial coverage of the company, we likened it to a “Tumblr for video.”
At that time the company was still in private beta, working out the kinks and trying to make its platform even easier to use and understand. But now it has pulled the beta tag off its product and is making it available to anyone who wants to sign up.
What is the psychological power behind what we call “social video?” How has it changed human behavior? What types of video motivates people most to share with our own social circles?
Chris Schreiber, Director of Marketing for the social video advertising company, Sharethrough, shares with us his special insight on these and other important questions, and explains the benefits for marketers to get a deeper understanding of the fundamental psychological principles behind social video.

YouTube users fluent in Japanese can now watch videos in that language with automatically generated captions, thanks to the same speech-recognition technology that also powers voice input on Android mobile devices.
In part one of our recurring series about branded social video marketing, we define what social video is and explain how brands are using it to boost engagement.

Social video sharing is fast becoming a hot market, with multiple applications arriving to make it easier for users to shoot and share videos with their friends on networks like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
The latest to enter the fray is Vibop, an app from editing software maker NewBlue that combines social sharing with drop-dead-easy video editing on the fly. At the core of Vibop is a “shoot it, shine it, share it” process that simplifies the art of creating mobile videos that are not only personal but also look good once they’re shared with friends. The “shoot it” stage is pretty self-explanatory, but it’s the “shine it” portion of the app that really sets it apart from much of the competition.
The Creative Live! Cam inPerson HD delivers smooth 720p Skype chats, and its quad microphones are perfect for capturing audio from everyone seated around a boardroom conference table, but its audio and video performance are otherwise unremarkable.
It's been 10 years since Bram Cohen, Chief Scientist and Co-founder of BitTorrent, Inc. first invented the revolutionary peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing protocol for transferring large files over the Internet.
Now on its 10 year anniversary, BitTorrent's disruptive technology has an installed base of over 160 million clients worldwide, and has grown to become a viable distribution platform for content producers around the world. The company, which first incorporated in 2004 has shifted its focus back to its roots in content delivery, and looks to seeding its future in live streaming. While the P2P file-sharing protocol has long been associated with digital piracy, BitTorrent has worked with a variety of filmmakers, musicians and authors over the past year, to help distribute films using the company’s P2P technology. I caught up with Cohen at last year's NewTeeVee Live where he discussed BiTorrent's future in P2P live streaming. In an interview with TorrentFreak, Cohen said that solving a challenging technical problem while creating value was his motivation to get started on a P2P live streaming solution.
For years, Flash Player has been the answer to the question, “how can I be sure everyone can play my video?” But today, with Apple refusing to support Flash Player on iDevices, it’s clear that a 100% Flash solution isn’t enough.

Social video sharing is all the rage these days, with a number of new websites and mobile app makers trying to make it easier for users to record and share short video moments with their friends.
Okay, this is some pretty cool news. Google has just released a new product to Labs, called Swiffy.
Its purpose? To convert your Flash files to HTML5 at the touch of a button. This gives website owners, designers, developers, and publishers an easy way to ensure their video, animation, and game content can be viewed across all platforms and devices, including the iPad and iPhone, which don’t support Flash. Unless you live under a rock, you’re familiar with the Flash-Vs-HTML5 debate, which was fueled by Apple’s decision to keep their iPad tablet devices free of Adobe Flash. Google has been fairly public about their love of Flash, but they certainly haven’t abandoned HTML5.
This 3-minute, step-by-step video tutorial will show you how to easily create captions for YouTube videos, which can help your video reach a wider audience.

EmbedPlus is a service which gives you far more control over how visitors to your site or blog can view and interact with videos. Regardless of what platform you use, or even if you don’t run a blog, with a few simple steps, you can add annotations, and show viewers just the parts of the video that you want them to see.
If you’re using WordPress, you will have to install a plugin in order for the embed code to work in your posts. Other blogging platforms such as Blogger or Tumblr don’t require a plugin in order for the service to work. Once you’ve chosen the YouTube video you want to embed, and selected whether or not you want to embed it in a WordPress blog, simply paste the link into the EmbedPlus website.
Social video marketers, we have a news update! We recently discovered a feature that Facebook was testing and it appears that they have just made public as of today.
Now, when you include a link in a comment on anyone’s Facebook post or status update, you’ll get an “expanded view” which contains a thumbnail preview and blurb associated with the website or a video that can be “previewed” (actually the whole video can be played) directly within the comment itself. This first came to my attention from Facebook Guru Mari Smith (I recommend you check out Mari Smith’s Facebook page and give it a “like,” because it’s a great resource of tips and she’s one of the most friendly social media experts you’ll find anywhere).
Here we go folks! All those high-priced OVPs are going to have to fight to stay alive as Longtail’s Bits on the Run has announced they’re going freemium (YA!) with a Free video hosting and streaming service option. While they’re not the first OVP to do free (as I already use PlayWire’s freemium service which is still going through some growing pains but for which you can sign up and click Free Premium account), they are perhaps one of the largest and most well known. Of course, it’s not quite all that.
I interviewed Rebecca Jeschke, Media Relations Director for the digital civil liberties group, The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). Rebecca shared with me how they fight for people’s rights with both creating videos and expression of freedom speech, and important information for all online video creators on what they need to know about how to deal with their videos being unfairly removed from YouTube and other service providers.
YouTube has been tinkering a bit lately with the design and interface of their video player. In fact, they seem to change things up pretty frequently, as far as redesigns go.
Quora, which is fresh of being one of the three chosen startups at Allen & Co conference, is adding the option to embed YouTube video in its answer pages, posts and question details this morning.
The Q & A site recently redesigned in order to offer users a better way to search for content and this latest step is yet another in its effort to provide a better user experience. “It’s going to make answers on the site great — It opens the door to the kind of answers you can provide,” says Quora’s Mark Bodnick. As an example he brings up the “Which are the best storytelling songs?” page, which now has around 60 videos. If anything, it’s a good bet video will increase user time on site.
We know there are thousands of online videos viewed daily, and we know there are millions of users on Facebook. As a small business owner, it’s clear that both YouTube and Facebook are valuable marketing tools to build and grow a business through sharing content, providing valuable information, boosting SEO and search engine ranking, and networking, to name a few of the benefits.
Facebook Vs YouTube For SEO However, a good question to ask is which of the two—Facebook or YouTube—have the best chance of boosting SEO? We know it makes sense to share any relevant business YouTube link on a Facebook business page, but is it because you’re simply spreading the word, or does Facebook have a stronger SEO impact than YouTube to better ensure the video will be found in search engine rankings vs. posting to YouTube alone? Also, how does Facebook videos compare to YouTube videos for SEO?
