David vs Goliath Video Camera Face-Off: iPhone 4S vs Canon 5D MKII - Side-by-Side Outdoors Video Shooting Comparison

Robino Films shot an extremely interesting video face-off between the king of video-enabled DSLR cameras, the Canon 5D MKII and the newest kid on the block in terms of compact size and simplification: the new iPhone 4S.

A small rig was set up so that both cameras could record the same subject at the same time, and the results are pretty impressive.

Exposure, shutter speed, frame rate and picture style were matched as close as possible between the two cameras.

The test shows that the tiny F2.4 lens and sensor on the iPhone provide pretty impressive results including also a bit of depth of field.

Here the settings used for this test:

iPhone 4S

- AE.AF locked.

Canon 5D MKII

- Canon 50mm 1.4
- ISO 160 ~ 640 (varied per shot to match the iPhone)
- F 7~22 (varied per shot to match the iPhone)
- Shutter 1/60th
- Auto WB
- Standard Picture Style
- 1080p 30

The test shows that the 4S is coming close to the 5D but in NO WAY is it better.

The iPhone is a great 1080p pocket camera and shows us where technology is heading.

The iPhone falls apart in these areas:

- Compression / codec (it's very noisy even in daylight)
- Tiny tiny tiny tiny sensor
- Lens (f2.4 is great for a cell phone though)
- Shutter (no control / stuck on auto)
- Framerate (stuck at 30p)
- No picture styles (contrast and sharpening is heavy)

Key positive points for the iPhone 4S:

resolution and portability.

How To Leverage YouTube Annotations To Create Effective Calls To Action

How To Leverage YouTube Annotations To Create Effective Calls To Action | Online Video Publishing | Scoop.it

From the article intro: "Annotations are an often overlooked aspect of YouTube videos.

They can lead the viewer to a number of actions, whether it's directing them towards other videos you've created or brings attention to a call-to-action such as liking, favoriting, subscribing, or commenting.

However the annotations are used, these messages that pop up in the video are a good way of directing traffic and keeping viewers informed, and good ones can create active responses that lead the YouTube algorithm to take a look at your video and say, "Hmm...lots of activity here, I kind of like that."

Better Than The Adobe Demo? Aggregate and Sync-Up Crowdsourced Video Footage From Any Event with Veokami

Better Than The Adobe Demo? Aggregate and Sync-Up Crowdsourced Video Footage From Any Event with Veokami | Online Video Publishing | Scoop.it

Excerpt from the article: For bands and show promoters who want to leverage those videos to engage with their audiences and show fans what it’s like to be at one of their concerts, Veokami offers tools for finding, adding and automatically sorting through and formatting different moments of an event.

The platform crawls YouTube looking for videos of a specific event, or users can submit videos that they’ve found.

Veokami then arranges the clips based on when they took place during the event, as well as a number of factors, such as audio and video quality.

The end result is an event video page that includes clips from many different videos and camera angles, allowing viewers to skip around and see a show from multiple perspectives.

The platform syncs up audio tracks, which lets the viewer watch a continuous stream of user-contributed content by automatically switching between videos whenever one of them ends. Viewers can also flip through various videos in a timeline view.

How To Scale A Large Video Site

How To Scale A Large Video Site | Online Video Publishing | Scoop.it

From the article: "Launching of large-scale online video portals requires a great deal of precision and accuracy at the design stage.

In addition to complex infrastructure of a Web platform (the portal itself), we have to deal with a no less complex infrastructure video platform (as content delivery is only part of the platform).

In this post, we will discuss some of the important principles of online video service design that we have learned over the five years of working on similar projects.

Encode Live Video to H.264/AVC with the New Flash Player 11

Encode Live Video to H.264/AVC with the New Flash Player 11 | Online Video Publishing | Scoop.it

The latest version of Flash Player (v.11.0) includes some exciting new features, including performance upgrades such as native 64-bit support, and asynchronous bitmap decoding. Perhaps most newsworthy though, is Flash Player’s new capability to encode live video streams to the H.264/AVC standard. This new feature will allow developers to create real-time, high-quality, live video streaming applications for chat, conferencing, and live event broadcasting.

The following article demonstrates how to take advantage of Flash Player 11.0′s new H.264 encoding capabilities within a video streaming application built using Flash Builder 4.5.

Go Wide, Fish-Eye and Macro With Only One Adaptor For Your iPhone 4: The olloclip

Go Wide, Fish-Eye and Macro With Only One Adaptor For Your iPhone 4: The olloclip | Online Video Publishing | Scoop.it

From the official site:

"The olloclip is a quick-connect lens solution for the iPhone 4 that includes fisheye, wide-angle and macro lenses in one small, convenient package that easily fits in your pocket.

Nestled in the palm of your hand, the olloclip connects to the iPhone within seconds so you’ll be sure to capture the image you want…if you don’t see the picture you’re looking for just flip it over to switch lenses.

The Fisheye lens captures approximately a 180 Degree field-of-view and produces some striking images.

The Wide-Angle lens is great for when you need that extra field of view, approximately double that of the normal IPhone.

The Macro lens applies roughly a 10X multiplier and allows you to focus the iPhone within 12-15mm of the subject.

The Macro lens is cleverly concealed within the olloclip and can be accessed by unscrewing the Wide-Angle lens that is normally attached to it."

Thanks to my great friend Stefanos Karagos of Xplain for introducing me to the Olloclip (among many other cool gadgets and apps).

New Video Codec Coming: H.265 Is Next

New Video Codec Coming: H.265 Is Next | Online Video Publishing | Scoop.it

Excerpted and edited from original intro: A new video format is on its way, which could alleviate some of the strain on those networks by delivering high-quality video with half as many bits.

The new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) spec, also referred to as H.265, should be a lot more efficient than H.264, which is the format of choice for most IP-enabled devices and applications.

The format, which is being developed by the ISO/IEC Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) and the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG), is expected to need 25 to 50 percent fewer bits for the delivery of H.264 video of the same quality.

The good news is that H.265 is on its way to standardization.

The bad news is that it likely can’t come quickly enough. The spec is expected to be circulated for comment next February, with some initial applications taking advantage of it in early 2013.

YouTube Gets Free, Cloud-Based Video Editing Thanks To New WeVideo Integration | TechCrunch

YouTube Gets Free, Cloud-Based Video Editing Thanks To New WeVideo Integration | TechCrunch | Online Video Publishing | Scoop.it

From the article intro: WeVideo, a newly launched cloud-based collaborative video editing platform, is today announcing integration with YouTube.

Starting this afternoon, YouTube users will be able to access a basic version of WeVideo’s online service in order to edit their video clips by adding titles, effects, animation, music, narration and more.

The editing tool will be provided directly on YouTube itself at YouTube.com/create.

...

For YouTube users, the “starter” package provided on the YouTube site will remain free.

It will offer easy to use features like a drag-and-drop editing interface, which lets you quickly add music, transitions, titles and other effects.

In addition, videographers can collaborate on projects together, where all project members can share their video clips via a single interface.

From here, videos can be edited using shared libraries by any group member. No one can overwrite your own edits, though – but they can use your video as the jumping off point to create their own.

In the future, WeVideo wants to offer real-time video collaboration as an option, too.

(Thanks to Giuseppe Mauriello for uncovering this)
