Nielsen, the TV ratings people, are out with the 2012 edition of their Television Audience report. Much of this is a repackaging of data released previously by Nielsen to its clients. But I hadn't seen it before. Amidst all the charts and graphs, two stunners:
• The total number of U.S. households with TV sets declined year to year for the first time since Nielsen started counting TV ownership.
• The number of households with no TV at all is at its highest level since 1975. Three percent of homes are TV-free.
The decline was not trivial, either — from 115.9 million TV households in 2011, Nielsen estimates that only 114.7 million homes in the U.S. will have a TV set in 2012.
That’s a decline of almost 1 percent at a time when the total number of U.S. households continues to grow.

To explore the potential of the technology, Canadian director Katerina Cizek used Popcorn.js together with a 3D graphics technology called Web GL to create a new documentary.
Called One Millionth Tower, the film explores how two high-rise towers in Toronto could be “re-imagined” by the tower residents, architects and animators.
The web-based documentary allows the user to explore a simple 3D environment and click to view one of six narratives. The environment you see is linked to the weather in Toronto at the time you are watching – so if the sky is overcast there, it will be overcast on your screen.
The narrative segments are linked to Wikipedia articles and Flickr photographs that update as people upload more photos.
The documentary itself was made without much video, relying instead on photos provided by the residents of the tower and recordings of their comments.

Because the documentary is essentially a 3D virtual environment, the viewer gets to control aspects such as the camera (viewing) angle.
The project was built using entirely open-source tools. The code for the documentary is available for anyone to browse, re-use or re-purpose."

Dailymotion, one of the most popular video sharing sites on the Internet, has just announced a new program which allows independent publishers to pick and select from a huge library of pre-licensed professional video clips and to publish them on their own web sites.

With Microsoft Expression Encoder 4, you can record a movie of your desktop screen of any size and simultaneously capture the webcam video and audio narration from a microphone.
Alternatively, you may capture the screen activity without the audio and add a voiceover later at the time of producing the video using the “Audio Overlay” feature.
Expression Encoder has been around for a while but with one limitation – the free version would only let you screen capture 10-minute video clips and if you were to record clip of longer duration, you had to switch to Expression Encoder Pro.
Well the good news is that Microsoft has recently released a new version – Expression Encoder SP2 – that contains bug fixes and stability enhancements and they’ve also dropped the time limitation.
