Pluto.TV Turns Web Videos Into Curated Television Channels

Pluto.TV Turns Web Videos Into Curated Television Channels | Le Top des Applications Web et Logiciels Gratuits | Scoop.it

Pluto.TV is a free online entertainment platform arranged in a similar way to television with nearly 100 channels, cross-device capabilities and shared signals that let multiple users watch the same thing at the same time. Features include popular content, easy access, intuitive channel guides, personalization, DVR and social features.

Rather than relying on a computer algorithm, the startup has employed 15 curators to program its channels. The company’s CEO Nick Grouf told Variety that 100 users of the site’s prelaunch version have spent about one hour per visit watching video, which Grouf believes is indicative of Pluto.TV’s ability to drive engagement.

According to Neilsen data, live TV makes up more than 90% of time spent viewing video today. Grouf believes Pluto.TV’s live-stream feature will prompt users to engage in social features like live chat to talk with friends as they watch together.

The channel guide is easy to navigate and is broken down into categories including Next Tech, Gaming, Stand-Up Comedy, Trending Now, Top Viral Videos, Top 40, Food, Travel, Mind & Body, Commercials 24/7, News, Sports and Education. And of course no online entertainment platform would be complete without a dedicated Cat channel.

173 Sud's insight:

The platform essentially sifts through the millions of online videos available on Youtube and elsewhere, finds the best ones, and then put them into channels, and shows on those channels, that run 24/7. It’s like a cable menu for online video.

Click on Pluto.TV and you will see several things: A continuous stream of content, access to nearly 100 channels based on various genres and interests, and a content guide that’s almost exactly like the old-school video guides you see on TV. The idea is that by packaging similarly-themed content into TV-sized “shows,” and presenting it in a linear stream, people will start watching and discovering stuff they’re bound to like.

The other important thing to note, here, is that Pluto.TV content is indeed linear. You can’t search for individual clips and watch them whenever you desire. The shows that the platform programs are available at set times on set channels — again, just like TV. That said, users do have the option to “favorite” which channels and shows they like the most for easier access.

The hundred channels on Pluto.TV pulls in content from the major online video platforms, including YouTube, Vimeo, and Dailymotion, across categories like hip-hop, snow, surf, food, fashion, health and fitness, travel, and sketch comedy, among many others. The company has also struck deals with premium content partners like Funny or Die, QVC, Refinery29, Maker Studios, Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch’s RocketJump, The Young Turks, and IconicTV (formerly known as Jay Z’s Life + Times).
