This is interesting because it shows how far the concept of 'Curation' has come in the last 10 years. I don't remember much about it but I remember that in the early days of Blogger, perhaps even before Google bought it, they had a tool or bookmarklet or some little button that had certain curation abilities. My first blog was on Blogger and I remember using that tool.

Later, I maintained a Posterous blog for a couple of years...maybe more. I liked Posterous a lot and was very sad when they sold it (Posterous) to Yahoo and then about a year later those jerks at Yahoo closed it down. I thought Posterous was a very nice blog with just the right amount of features to get the job done without getting too technical.

Felix Grobe's curator insight, June 9, 2018 10:43 AM

Google has just introduced "Collections", for Google+, a new service which allows any Google+ user to group his posts by topic and to create public, shareable collections of his favorite links, articles, videos and images.

To use Google Collections, simply go to your G+ profile page and then select "Collections" on the drop down menu appearing on the top left part of the page.

"Each collection can be shared publicly, privately, or with a custom set of people. Once you create your first collection, your profile will display a new tab where other people can find and follow your collections."

You can either create new posts containing whatever type of content inside a collection, or assign an existing, published post to a collection you have just created.

You can create as many collections as you like.

Google+ Collections is available on the web and on Android (iOS coming later).

My comment: Google+ Collections adds opportunity for creating additional value to G+ users by letting interests drive community engagement. This is a feature that sooner or later any social network will offer.

Free to use.

An absolutely significant skill in any research or investigation, for educators and learners in the digital age - the curation of content- with a clear focus or question in mind, the capacity to target a search field, sift through, reflect on and make decisions about the most suitable resource or evidence to use. What a great learning experience.

From Creating To Sense-Making: That's What Curation Is All About

Via Robin Good
Robin Good's curator insight, June 23, 2013 5:35 AM

Elizabeth Weaver Engel and Jeff De Cagna are the authors of a small but very useful guide to Content Curation originally written for membership groups, and first published in November 2012.

The guide offers a good introduction to why content curation is so important, how it can help any organization and what are the key things to know about it for anyone who knows little or nothing about it.

From the original PDF guide, entitled "Attention Doesn't Scale: The Role of Content Curation in Membership Associations":

"Content curation provides a potential path to a new type of thought leadership, one that is more suited to a world where information is no longer the scarce resource. Focus is. Meaning is. Wisdom is.

But that type of support will require a signicant shift in our business models.

For decades, associations have been in the business of generating information.

Our challenge now is to transform ourselves into being in the business of sense-making, helping members distinguish what new information is most relevant and integrate that information into their mental categories, and meaning-making, helping them understand the implications of that  new information for their worldviews."

Lots of good tips, references and relevant resources listed. Provides good foundational reference for any serious business reader.

Good intro to content curation. Resourceful. Informative. 8/10

With almost anyone now able to generate and publish content, finding relevance (signal to noise) is precoccupying knowledge workers everywhere. Sense-making, new media literacy and the ability to understand concepts across a wide range of disciplines are ctitical skills for the content curator in cutting through the noise to find that all important signal. Effective content curation will help us to focus and make sense of our complex and ambiguous world, to understand context and ultimately to make better decisons.

Collect, Curate, Communicate: The 3 C's Of Content Curation

Collect, Curate, Communicate: The 3 C's Of Content Curation | Education & Numérique | Scoop.it

This is an informative article by Jeremy Floyd about content curation and useful for novices. Here is an excerpt from it:

"In the past, we had a few channels of information and each channel had a few gatekeepers that sorted, prioritized and reported the information to the public.

Today, information-consumers have an endless supply of channels. News, entertainment, gossip and professional development all drain into the same information stream that flows rich throughout the connected world. The gatekeepers have been removed and anyone is free to flow about the stream looking for relevant and useful information.

Since people have “clipped” news articles, there has been content curation. Today, however, the information flow is that of a mighty raging river, and it’s easy to get lost in the current. Content curators are effective at managing a series of information pipes and sharing that with their following.

1. Collect:
The content curator’s work is never done. Minutes after perusing your RSS reader 20 more articles have been posted and the cycle starts again. In the mainstream news era, the national news came on at precisely the same time every night.

2. Curate:
- Consistent Subject Matter – Because the information flow is swift and always moving, content curators must be consistent with their niche and resist the temptation to follow whims. Define the topics that you are going to cover.
- Direct Communication – Social media has no appreciation for nuance, so as a curator, be direct.
- Filter Consistently – As news editors filtered the news that was worthy of their readership, think about what is relevant to your readership. Filter out the stories that are redundant, irrelevant or boring.

3. Communicate:
- Be human - Bring your voice to your content. Be real.
- Be frequent not a freak when you overpublish..."

Tom Webster illustrates clearly why content curation is not a backup solution for those looking for a content marketing strategy that saves them time and resources.

Content curation, according to Tom Webster, "is even harder--and rarer--than quality creative output".

and

"...the ability to create value through curation is uncommon."

And the solution, notwithstanding what conferences and events may appear to suggest, is not simply in having new fancy tools. The real difference is in how me and you curate the content we select.

"And the learned skill (through pattern recognition) that both the content curator and the content docent must share is the ability to discriminate."

Humans can "discriminate" in much more subtle ways than computers can, and this ability, if refined, is going to become a very valuable asset in the near future.

This is why content curators as well as content "guides" (from museum docents) will play an increasingly important role to their audiences, especially when compared to those who are just passing on "interesting links".

He further writes: "It will be increasingly difficult, in this age of declining content arbitrage, to build an audience through curation—to get new people to gravitate to your content if you are just passing along other people's content.

But if you build an audience first—if you are known for something—then your curation has meaning."

The author also points to two excellent examples of content curation: John Gruber (Daring Fireball) and Chris Penn (christopherspenn.com).

A good reading for anyone interested in better understanding what content curation is all about.

Why Content Curation and Crowdsourcing Will Change Everything

Why Content Curation and Crowdsourcing Will Change Everything | Education & Numérique | Scoop.it

From the original article by Tom George on his "Internet Billboards".
Here are some interesting excerpts from the post about content curation.
"After having spent the better part of four years curating content from renowned bloggers, journalists and authors as well as building a platform here on Internet Billboards, which has evolved into a wonderful community of content curator’s.

Here is my definition of content curation. A content curator is someone who finds, organizes, presents and shares valuable information (content) in many forms, on a specific topic, in a way that provides special context and or a unique engagement with his or her readers. In actuality when done correctly, over time it positions the curator as an expert in his or her respective field and defines their reputation as a thought leader.

A good curator will mix curation with his or her own original content, to give interpretations for the express purpose of allowing others to form their own conclusions.
...
Why curation and crowdsourcing will and should become more important to you. I will give you ten reasons.
1. There is just too much content;
2. Social Sites Are Full Of Spam;
3. Privacy concerns with big data;
4. Limiting risk and using many minds;
5. Technology must assist us and help us not hinder us;
6. People Will recognize the need to build meaningful relationships;
7. Information will flow freely;
8. Trust and authority will be the new currency;
9. Curation helps you establish relationships with thought leaders;
10. Crowd Sourcing can make things possible..."

I liked the definition of Curation from Tome George (author of the piece):

"A content curator is someone who finds, organizes, presents and shares valuable information (content) in many forms, on a specific topic, in a way that provides special context and or a unique engagement with his or her readers. In actuality when done correctly, over time it positions the curator as an expert in his or her respective field and defines their reputation as a thought leader. A good curator will mix curation with his or her own original content, to give interpretations for the express purpose of allowing others to form their own conclusions."

There is a glaring omission from the benefits list of crowd sourcing and content curation in terms of pedagogical value - please add in: it increases the possibility of constructivist learning.

Le titre est ambitieux, l'article est très intéressant en ce qu'il concerne autant les fonctionnalités de l'outil qu'une analyse de son utilisation par l'entreprise désireuse de faire de la curation de contenu.

Content Curation Guidelines for Where to Share | Curata Blog

Content Curation Guidelines for Where to Share | Curata Blog | Education & Numérique | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article by Pawan Deshpande, CEO at Curata:
"By definition, content curation is the act of continually identifying, organizing, and sharing the best and most relevant content on a specific topic or issue online.  When evaluating which content curation tool to use, there are three primary areas of consideration:

1.The Inputs – Where does the content curation tool get information from? What type of content will this allow me to curate?  Will it help identify and recommend relevant content?

2.The Organization  – What does this tool offer in terms of organizing content once it has been identified?  What type of data models does this represent content as? In a simple chronological list, or an inter-linked structure? Does it let me annotate and editorialize the curated content?

3.The Venue – How and where can I share the content once I have decided to curate it?

In this blog post, I am primarily going to focus on the decided on a content curation tool based on the venue – the channels to which your content is curated.

- Embedded Widget.
What is it? Embedded widgets allow you to display curated content in a small pane on your existing web properties.
Pro’s: Relatively easy to implement with Javascript code or create an iframe.
Con’s: Content in widgets is almost never indexed by search engines because they are rendered in Javascript which search engines do not consider.
Who should use it? Organizations that are looking primarily to touch up their website with some fresh content may want to use a widget.

- Microsite.
What is it? A dedicated microsite or section of a website populated primarily with curated content.
Pro’s: Microsites really create a full-fledged experience with curated content as the center piece and can easily because the hub for a specific topic or issue.
Con’s: Because the curated content is not tucked away in a widget and is instead front and center, you will need to pay a lot more attention to what you curate.
Who should use it? Organizations that are looking to become an authoritative destination for a topic or issue to position themselves as a key resource or thought leader, or to drive traffic and visibility.

- Personalized Page.
What is it? A personalized page is a lightweight, single page microsite filled with curated content.
Pro’s: Easy to get up and running and are indexed by search engines. Usually free.
Con’s: Only one page is indexed by search engines.
Who should use it? Individuals or cost conscious non-profits who want to create an information resource.

- Email Newsletters.
What is it? An email newsletter or digest containing the latest curated content that is sent out on a regular interval.
Pro’s: Email newsletters are a great way to continually educate an audience on a regular basis without fail.
Con’s: Email newsletters have two drawbacks: 1. They are not indexed by search engines. 2. They are not real time.
Who should use it? Email newsletters are a great medium for curated content for curators with an existing captive audience.

- Twitter & Social Media Channels.
What is it? Posting curated content on Twitter and other social media channels such as Facebook and LinkedIn through status updates. The curated content could be links to blog articles or other web content, or curated tweets.
Pro’s: Posting curated content is different from other mediums, because it’s a very time sensitive medium.
Con’s: The drawback of sharing curated content on social media is that if you don’t have a lot of curated content on your topic, then it’s hard to get noticed. Because social media is content is so fleeting, if you are not constantly and consistently posting your curated content, then your impact will be minimal.
Who should use it? Curators who have topics with a sufficient throughput of content.  Curators with an existing or potential audience on social media channels. Curators with content that has a likelihood of being shared virally.

- Feeds.
What is it? Content that’s shared through RSS feeds or other data feeds.
Pro’s: People with RSS readers can subscribe to them – who are usually visitors who return regularly. In addition, some search engines crawl RSS feeds.
Con’s: Social media these days has in many ways taken the place of RSS feeds and provide more room for annotation. Unlike social media, it’s also difficult to annotate your content as a curator and add your own context.
Who should use it? Curators with an audience that prefers this medium.

So what’s the right answer? Which venue should you choose as you evaluate content curation tools?
A sound content curation strategy utilizes all of the venues and channels, but drives all visitors back to a single microsite. If you’re using a robust content curation platform then you should be able to easily syndicate your content to all channels with ease..."

well, it is a pity that two skilled professionals do not know to how to do converge assertively their differences, and result in better contents, and content curation. Both of you are partly right and partly wrong, under my point of view, and instead of focusing in your differences, why don´t you focus on what may bring you together?
