Robin Good: Jeroen Wijering, creator of the JW Player gave a valuable and informative presentation at the last HTML5 Video Summit event in Los Angeles, targeted at those video publishers wanting to better understand the key advantages of adopting HTML5 for video. "HTML5 video is just a tag like an image tag, that is supported by HTML5. So you put a video tag in your website, you say ‘the source is this video,’ and it will play. You don’t have to use Flash or Silverlight or other difficult tools or plug-ins. It’s a very basic way of embedding video on your website,” explained Wijering. So that’s what it is, but why is it more useful that other methods of streaming video, such as Flash or Silverlight? As to ‘why should I use it?,’ I think there’s two answers. 1) There’s a long-term answer in that if you have support in HTML5 itself, it’s a lot easier to have video interact with other stuff on your website. It’s a lot easier for accessibility purposes to be able to have blind people, deaf people jump into your video and see it in alternate ways. It’s a lot easier for search engines like Google to actually pick up the video. They have a lot of trouble right now because everybody has their own Flash player. ...That’s the long-term answer. 2) The short-term is much less elaborate. “In terms of short term, it’s very simple: Apple does not support Flash,” said Wijering. Any publisher that wants to stream to iPad and iPhone owners had better get familiar with HTML5." Recommended. 8/10 For more from the session including what audio and video codecs work with (some) HTML5 browsers, watch the full video: http://www.onlinevideo.net/2012/02/what-is-html5-video-and-why-should-you-use-it/

Robin Good: Not everyone likes YouTube new interface facelift, but what counts, is how effective your YouTube presence is in helping you reach your audience and in be found, linked and discovered by new potential fans. Casey Zeman at SocialMediaExaminer has some good, illustrated advice, to share. "#1: Add Your Custom URLs in the Newly Placed Description Area #2: Add Overlays to ALL of Your Videos (Previous YouTube guidelines required you to promote your videos in order to take advantage of YouTube’s self-branded overlays. However, YouTube has changed that requirement. You don’t need to have a running and approved promotion for a specific video to take advantage of overlays. Now you can simply create the promoted video, pause the campaign and still have the power of the branded overlay.) #3: Prevent Other Ads from Showing on Your Video" But there is more. Avid Studio for the iPad enables you to quickly arrange your clips in the Storyboard, make precision edits using the Timeline, and add high-quality transitions, effects, and soundtracks to your movie footage." It looks to be a big step up from Apple’s iMovie app, which is strictly for home hobbyists. The Avid Studio app combines a storyboard and timeline interface, where users can arrange clips in the storyboard, then use the timeline for precise cuts. It also offers touch controls not found in the desktop, like the ability to resize and rotate titles with a gesture. To get media to edit, users can capture video or photos within the app, import media from iTunes, or capture from a camera using the iPad Camera Connection Kit ($29). More than a basic editor, the Avid app includes picture-in-picture effects, as well as multiple audio tracks for layering sounds. When they’re done, users can upload their creations directly to their YouTube or Facebook accounts, save them to their computers, or send them to their Avid Studio desktop program for further editing. Other features include 3D animations, transitions, and titles; full title and graphic control; pan-and-zoom for photos; and full screen playback." Robin Good: P2P video live streaming is now a reality albeit still in the Beta testing phase. BitTorrent has now a live web site where you can download the P2P video streaming software for either PC, Mac or Linux computers. Once installed you can test the effectiveness of P2P live video streaming technology by checking out the test streams or the live sessions every Friday night (8pm PST). "Conventional video streaming—through, say, YouTube or Netflix—eats up network resources because each user is pulling in their own individual feed. The live peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming protocol created by BitTorrent founder and chief scientist Bram Cohen, instead works much like BitTorrent itself does. Everybody that requests a certain video stream shares the feed between themselves, rather than just leeching the content. This reportedly reduces lag drastically, network load and increases video quality for those watching. And, just like when torrenting, the more people that sign on to a stream, the better it looks for everybody." Downloads: http://live.bittorrent.com/downloads.html

Key highlight from the article: "The H.265 video codec, also known as High Efficiency Video Coding or HEVC, is being designed to replace the current H.264 standard used for high definition and Full HD (1920x1080) video encoding and decoding. ... The Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding reached a new milestone for the H.265 video codec during the past week, and is about to unleash the new “monster” video standard within the next year. ... H.265 will be designed to support new, still to be created video delivery and streaming technologies from day one, including devices working at 4K and Ultra HDTV (also known as 8K or 4320p) resolutions. Just to put things in perspective, the Ultra HDTV definition contains about 16 times the amount of pixels present in a 1080p video stream." Robin Good: If you are interested in aggregating (bonding) multiple cellular network connections to live video stream a remote event, I have out together this visual shortlist of the few alternatives available today in the market. "At the moment, the key playing field that these devices compete in is link aggregation of 3G networks, where a single mobile/cellular data service may not be able to offer or sustain the bandwidths between 1Mbps and 2Mbps required for broadcast (or near-broadcast) quality video. These devices aggregate several such services together and use them in parallel to create a single, higher availabilty and higher capacity connection." All of these units allow you to utilize multiple standard USB-type mobile connection units, those typically used to connect to the Internet outside of your home, to aggregate the bandwidth available on each into one coherent stream. Nonetheless prices for this type of equipment are way out of my investment range, I am quite curious to see how this technology develops and whether there will be soon prosumer-level solutions. Robin Good: Tom Guilmette has published an excellent guide on how you can use multiple GoPro camcorders to do a live video stream of a live event. From the original article: "For under $300 you get a tiny wide angle 16:9 1080p camera that is also a self contained video camcorder. The GoPro records picture and sound to built in SD cards as mp4 files. You can put GoPros anywhere (and yea, they are even waterproof in the included case). And now GoPro has released a Hero2 new model that has sharper optics, an easy to navigate menu, better light sensitivity and more recording options. ...many of you may not know that these little cameras can output analog and HD signals that can be fed into a live production truck. This article will tell you how to do it and why most attempts to get these to work as live POVs prove to be an epic failure." From the article: "In a 45-minute session at the recent Streaming Media West conference in Los Angeles, MTV Jan Ozer taught a roomful of attendees the basics and complexities of adaptive streaming. “There’s two basic types of adaptive streaming technologies: one is a server-based technology, and the primary server-based technology now is RTMP Flash. With a server-based technology, the server is in charge of delivering a different stream to the player,”... “With an HTTP-based system, which is HTTP Flash, HTTP Live Streaming — or HLS, which is the Apple system — the player monitors the same characteristics, but it’s in charge of going to get a different stream when the circumstances dictate a stream change, ...” If you are looking to learn more about adaptive streaming and its encoding needs, as well as related concepts, such as keyframes, chunking, and manifest files you need to check this video out: http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid897709167001?bckey=AQ~~,AAAAADEURYw~,kpjcfLGBbVfV_nqUUCkA1vYpmRTGak7R&bctid=1352506026001 Full article: http://www.onlinevideo.net/2012/01/everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-adaptive-streaming%e2%80%a6/ (Curated by Robin Good)
